Behemoth announced in 2006 that the game will be available for download via the Xbox Live Arcade service. It was published as part of Microsoft's Summer of Arcade marketing and quickly became the best-selling game in the Arcade category in 2008. It was named the 2008 XBLA Awards' Best Game of the Year. Castle Crashers was ported to the PlayStation 3 and Windows in 2010 and 2012, respectively. On Xbox One in 2015, and on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2019, a remastered version was published. After picking a character, the player navigates around a graph-like world map to choose a starting level (beginning with the wizard's assault on the castle); after a level is completed, the player may restart or revisit it at any time. Other levels include shops where the player can purchase items for healing, attacking, or defense with coins earned from defeated foes, and arena levels where the player can complete challenges to unlock additional characters; however, in co-op, the arena becomes a player vs player match, similar to the final battle in which you fight for a princess.
