The decision to identify African elephants as two distinct species is seen as a significant conservation move since it underlines the distinct issues that each species confronts. Scientists believe that the classification would draw greater attention to forest elephants, who are often disregarded by governments and funders when combined alongside more prominent savanna elephants. African elephants are protected to varied degrees in each of their range nations. They are also protected by international environmental treaties like as CITES and the Convention on Migratory Species. There have been recent attempts to re-legalize the international commerce in ivory, but they have so far failed.
