To some extentâ and it's about darn time! While it is not a tampon, menstruation pad, or piece of menstrual underwear, we are finally getting a period emojiâ kind of. The new period emoji, officially dubbed âdrop of blood,â is the product of some hard effort and smart collaboration on the part of Plan International UK, a children's organisation dedicated to advancing children's rights and gender equality for girls worldwide. They have been pressing the Unicode Consortium (the official emoji organization) since 2017 to introduce a period emoji. Unfortunately, the period underwear emoji they provided (shown right) was rejected, but they had the brilliant idea to collaborate with NHS Blood and Transplant to submit a new proposal âa simple drop of blood. Their efforts were successful, as the new emoji was accepted and cleared for publication later this year. While this is just a drop in the bucket, it is a step in the right direction and a welcome addition to what is perhaps the world's most widely used language.

Periods should be more openly discussed since menstruating women are often encouraged to be embarrassed of their bodies, to conceal and apologize for their regular processes. However, while we wait for such period visibility, we can now practice it in our own personal chats with the use of a new period emoji. Unicode announced the addition of 59 new emojis this year, including a blood drop that many use to signify menstruation. The blood emoji is the result of a campaign by Plan International UK in which over 55,000 individuals have called for period representation in the emoji keyboard.
Additionally, the new series has an abundance of handicap representation, including two different types of wheelchairs, a probing cane, deaf emojis, a hearing device, and prosthetic limbs.
